Royal Pavilion Ice Rink

The Royal Pavilion Ice Rink has become Brighton’s’ most loved and anticipated Christmas tradition since its inception in 2010. Having welcomed well over 1,000.000 skaters since opening its doors for the first time, high standards of operation and production have always been key to its ongoing success.

JRG Productions are responsible for the safe delivery of the ice rink acting as Principal Contractor for the build and strike, a robust and reliable, energy efficient site wide lighting installation, a high quality, automated and weather proof audio system and the overall installation of the internal and external ice rink fitout.

Principal Contractor

RG Productions are proud to act as the Principal Contractor for the installation and removal, having done so since 2015. With the site being located within the gardens of a grade 1 listed building, exceptional care and attention has to be taken with every element of the works. Careful coordination and management ensure that the Palace, gardens and its occupants remain safe and protected at all times.

Our specialist knowledge of Ice Rinks also helps to ensure that ice building targets are continually met in ever more demanding conditions.

Key Points:

Lighting

The Royal Pavilion Ice Rink has utilised the services of a number of Lighting contractors prior to the appointment of JRG Productions. Over the first seven seasons, the installations continually suffered the same issues, largely due to water ingress, incorrect equipment selections and poor maintenance.

The rink has seen the number of issues fall to near zero over the 6 seasons since being awarded the contract. This is has been achieved with the use of new, high standard, correctly specified  equipment, by ensuring all equipment, cabling and distribution has been thoroughly tested prior to installation, and by following good installation practices for outdoor events.

The lighting system does more than providing the wow factor to the thousands of customers that visit each week. Thanks to the advanced control and scheduling software, the lighting is used to signal when skating sessions begin, end and when they are about to start, automatically.

Audio

JRG Productions have supplied the ice rink’s p.a. system since its second season of operation in 2011. The system comprises of dual zone control giving the venue the flexibility to playback different music inside and out. Playback is provided by network streaming services with remote playlist accessibility. The system also consists of automated session notifications to further assist the venue in smooth and reliable operation. IP rated external speakers ensure uninterrupted playback, whatever the weather.

Testimonial

“We have worked with Jason for fourteen years now and he has been integral to the development of the Royal Pavilion Ice Rink into one of the most popular Christmas attractions in the UK, which has seen over a million people skate with us since we began.

As principle contractor for the build and strike, JRG has overall responsibility for a team of up to 60 people working to create 2,230sqm of structures, including a 130 cover full service restaurant, toilets, box office, skate exchange and over 1,000sqm of ice.

Despite tight build and strike time frames and restricted access owing to the sensitivity of the historic setting, JRG ensures our build and strike run like clockwork. Our lighting and sound scheme, designed and delivered by JRG, is one of our main selling points for customers and is the only system we have ever worked with to stand up convincingly to the challenges of UK wintery weather at an open air south coast event.

Once open, Jason manages Laine Ltd’s operations, plant and maintenance to permanent rink standards, box office, skate exchange, and the ice itself for an extremely busy and well-loved Christmas venue, open for 10 weeks and seeing up to 4,000 visitors per day.”
